EE Richmond Like a wassssuppppp
Hey Guys!!!!!! I made it! I made it to Cabo! Congratulations to me! 896 miles down - 23,000 and some change to go!
At the moment I'm coming to you live from a swanky condo/apartment thing in the heart of the marina area. The view is insane. Beautiful, clear blue water flanking against the hulls of multi-million dollar boats. Craggy mountains jutting up out of the sand. A warm tropical breeze seeping through the planks in the blinds...
You see, the craziness has already begun. I dropped anchor here around 8PM last night, changed out of my soaking wet clothing, made some warm pasta and passed out cold. This morning I awoke this little slice of paradise and quickly gathered my things to head inland. It was quite gusty as I attempted to row the very large distance into town so after a half hour or so of beating into the wind with my little rubber boat a panga driver took pity on me and gave me a tow into the marina proper. I asked him to drop me near the entrance to the town but as we cruised by some rows of boats I noticed Abby Sunderland's insanely eye-catching boat docked off to one side. Her dad and my friend, Laurence, was camped out on the dock. The panga driver must have thought i was nuts. I had just finished explaining to him that i was not from here and had just arrived as I began shouting at the dock and waving my arms like a loon at Laurence. It was crazy! You dont expect to see people you know when you're a thousand miles south of the border! So crazy! It turns out that Abby's non-stop circumnav has been derailed for the moment as she had to pull in for another round of repairs by the team. I hadn't seen her boat up close before so it was cool spending the morning with them drinking their coffee, eating, their snacks, and budding down. Apparently the marina here had offered them the use of this condo-thing for free so they in turn are hospitably allowing me to shower, internet, and launder clothing here. So nice!
The trip from Ensenada was quite nice. Up until 5 hours out of Cabo where I encountered a small storm that trashed some gear and left me to hand steer in the sleeting rain and cold everything went really really well. I mean there were stretches of days where the wind was so steady and gentle and the sky so clear it was just pure paradise. Probably one of the most stand out things about the trip was the insane amount of wildlife I saw. I 've done this stretch before but I just dont remember being exposed to so many great sightings - guess it was just good luck this time! During the course of the run from Ensenada down I probably saw at least a dozen whales....probably more if I really thought about it. And not just 'oh hey, there's a whale out there in the distance', I mean real, up-close full broaching of a humpback. The sort of encounter where when they hit the water on their big broad back, you dont just hear it, you feel it. Like a rumble of a train or some sort of big hollywood explosion. what phenomenal creatures...
other noteworthy things: unfortunately, about 300 miles south of ensenada my mainsail blew out. and it was bad. the thing is pretty much in two pieces. the sails are old, i knew this. i knew i would need to replace them at some point in time or at least taket them in for some repairs and reinforcements. but this was pretty unexpected. at the time i was about 30 miles south of an anchorage/town called Turtle Bay so I made the decision to overnight there so I would have the time to assess and possibly repair it. There weren't really any other cruising sailboats during my stopover so unfortunately I wasn't able to enlist the help or tools of some more seasoned veterans. I repaired the sailed with Gorilla tape and headed back out the next morning. It sailed great for 3 or 4 hours and then I could tell it wasnt going to hold, that it would eventually separate if the wind picked up even a hair. From then on I sailed the boat under headsail alone. Although slightly less stable the boat made pretty good time and their was a nice wind from behind to push us steadily downwind. The weather and seas were perfect and what could have been a really shitty, uncomfortable trek turned out to be just fantastic.
Then yesterday happened. When I woke up it was grey. The morning passed, I made some lunch, it was still grey. Then finally around 5 PM or so it happened. The winds suddenly picked up, the rain just let loose. As I rushed to swap out the large, light drifter sail for a sturdier, smaller jib the force of the seas beat the autopilot beyond its breaking point. The repairs I had made in Marina del Rey, which had worked so blissfully for the 850 miles preceding this point, couldnt hold any longer and I was left to handsteer the remainder of the distance, without a spare moment to even go inside to changer out the little shorts i had been wearing during the day, which at night had become a stupid, stupid, freezing nuisance. All in all though I really cant complain. I was given some of the most amazing sailing days, and now I'm here among friends, among sweets. What else do you really want, you know? Oh, besides a new mainsail....
Alright, I'm off now to begin the hunt. Someone to repair, some warehouse to reorder from, some way to continue on the journey...
Speak with you all soon. Here are some little updates I made from sea:

EE Richmond exotic locales
Today was a day like yesterday and the one before that in that it rained and it rained alot. today was a day unlike those past in that I WENT TO A WALMART. Not even in my American living do i oft frequent the good ol' W-Mart but today i did. I really needed some tupperware type things of the large variety so it was pretty much the only option. All my Bob's Red Mill sacks were getting damp from the weather and it would hurt my heart so to see all the delciousness go to waste.
Lessons learned: Mexican Wal-marts are like our Wal-Marts, except that you pay in pesos. Groundbreaking.

EE Richmond the afternoon of living dangerously
hey all
im trying really hard to be a good blogger. and by good i pretty much just mean "regular" or "frequent"... not good as in pulitzer prize-winning (obvsly!). that said, i really put A LOT of energy into getting to this internet connection today so i could try to keep this consistency going and so i could UPLOAD A VIDEO!
since it's pretty hairy weather it wasn't at all possible to bring my dinghy from the boat into town. instead, i decided i would try to hop from fishing boat to fishing boat to get to the dock. Bobbie is about 6 large boats out from the pavement so it didn't seem like such a dangerous proposition....until i tried to do it. let me tell you...god, it was terrifying! these boats im next to are in the 90 to 100ft range, which means their deck areas are 10-15feet off the water. but perhaps more pertinetly most of the boats are such shitshacks that you have a 50-50 chance of hitting a solid bit of deck as you do of hitting a hole in it. i got half way once, cursed myself and then wussed out. but then after another 20 minutes or so sitting outside in the rain trying to hitch a ride to no avail i decided i was really just going to go for it. the 2nd to last jump has almost 8 feet between the 2 boats...but when timed just right the swell closes the gap to a mere 2 or 3....and it's at the moment one must jump...and jump i did. man i really wish i had some video of this happening. it was nuts. oh! and once i got to the last boat and was trying to make to jump to the concrete some security guards pulled up. at first i thought i was busted (this may or may not have been legal!) and then i thought i might be able to coax some help. but nothing, i guess they didnt see the problem. they just smiled, waved and took a picture of me on their camera phone and kept rolling. real cool, dudes. once i made it to land i had to cruise past like 6 different security check points where gaggles of peach fuzzed boys were totin' semi-automatic rifles. they didnt seem to have a problem with my being there but im sure they were probably more than a little confused as to where i came from. i do not think i can return this way home. anyway, here's the vidddy update!
ciao pals! xo.

EE Richmond it's a blowin'
Hey Dudes! I mean, Hola dudes!
Just a quick update. Yesterday really just flew by here. My two goals in Ensenada were to take on extra fuel (check) and get the Immigration paperwork going. As it turns out the huge fronts that've been assaulting the So-Cal area are on the move down here as well and the Port Captain of the Harbor here "closed" the marina for exiting boats. What's that mean? It means that they aren't giving boats exit zarpes because of the weather. I had really wanted to get back out on the water yesterday and continue the southbound trek but I guess it's probably for the better that they wouldn't clear me out. There were Gale Force Wind warnings (read: hella stormy weather) and small craft advisories out for the majority of the Baja Coast down here. By the time I had gotten back from town and into the harbor the winds had already picked up so insanely i couldn't even row my little dinghy back out to the boat at anchor...I would've been flipped within seconds! Cwazy!! Instead, I took some shelter inside another sweet little sailing couple's boat while we tried to track down a panga fisherman to tow me out there. It was a hairy ride but I was glad to be back aboard Bobbie so I could tend to settling the anchor better for the heavy weather.
Last night was the first time I've had any appetite since I left Marina Del Rey so I made myself a nice big batch of tomato soup with grilled onions and garlic...it really hit the spot. I did a bit of tidying, listened to some podcasts, and cozied up with some LONG WAY DOWN DVDs (guilty pleasure!). Had a great rest falling alsleep to the sounds of the pouring rain.
Had a bit of cleanup this morning where water wasn't draining properly, leaking, etc. Another blessing I guess for not heading out yesterday - I got to see how the exit routes handled the massive onslaught of water. There're a couple areas that need to be routed better before she's ready for a proper beating at sea. Guess I'll get to that today.
Just checking the new forecasts right now. It's more of the same, red flags all over the place. I need to go check with the officials again this morning but if it looks like I'm gonna be holed up here for a few days I'm gonna put together plans for traveling around the area while I'm here. Always things to see!
Alright, I'm off to see what the day has in store...byyyyye.

EE Richmond Made it to Ensenada
Made a pitstop to fill up with extra fuel in the event of a windless trip down Baja and to get the clearance/immigration papers rolling.
The sail down was pretty good, light but relatively steady. It was a reasonably comfortable trip but exhuasting nonetheless. After the rush-rush of pre-departure events and then getting myself in the routine of 20 minute sleep cycles my body's pretty pissed. Got a great night sleep last night at anchor though and woke up to a family of barking seals swimming beside the boat...cute little buggers.
Off to check in with the paperwork dudes...

EE Richmond DIGITAL LIVING, DIGITAL LOVING
dearest faraway friends of the internet ether,
i'm writing to update you on the goings-on of my last couple weeks. again, i must apologize as my updates have been sparse and infrequent. but sometimes in life things are so hectic that the days fly by like only minutes on the clock and alls i can really say is i'm sorry.
as of writing this, i am still in marina del rey, my home port. i've been experiencing some additional delays but am veryveryvery pleased to announce they are all (save for 1 package) behind me. sunday's slated departure turned more into a christening and farewell celebration that an actual exit. it was a last minute call to push back an extra day to address an issue with my autopilot (the device that will take the wheel during brief spurts in which i will need to prepare meals and rest). having gone on without it would have been brash (aka very me) and ultimately would have put me through some very grueling and exhausting days and nights for no good reason at all. i'm not racing, this is not a race. so for once in my life i decided to be an adult and enact a bit of patience.
the entirety of monday was spent disassembling and re-assembling my NAVICO wheelpilot and adding the needed pieces to make it function properly. ordering the parts from the manufacturer would have taken much longer than I would have been able to wait so I (along with some dear help) decided to fashion the pieces from other found materials. it was quite the repair but a successful one. that evening i refueled the tank to do a final testsail of the equipment but shortly after the engine fired it choked out and died and I was unable to restart it. something had gotten in the tank that was poising the fuel supply. it was a nightmare; i was devastated; it had been such a good day...
so tuesday, i was up at the crack of dawn collecting supplies to bleed to fuel supply and install a series of new water-seperating filters into the line. it was touch and go, trial and error. had i damaged the engine beyond repair? if it was repairable would i even be able to afford it? who knows. so i spent the whole of tuesday huddled over my old Perkins 4-107 like a weary spotted dog totally filthy from diesel exhaust and oil residue. by the time i called it quits last night i had replaced and cleaned several filters, re-routed fuel lines, and taken more than a mouthful or two of diesel in the siphoning process.
this morning i awoke to complete the bleeding process of the high pressure side of the engine - the last step i couldnt complete by myself last night because my arms are not 9 feet in span (and therefore unable to complete the two simultanous operations needed to purge it propely). a mere 10 minutes after this morning's session and the engine was again running, yesterday's work had been a success. i had done the right things.
so that pretty much brings us up to speed. i'm sitting at my favorite cafe in venice beach, catching up on the bazillion or so emails that have gone untended and updating you fine folks on my whereabouts. by the time most of you will be reading this it will be my tomorrow and i shoulds be sailing, at long last. finally the stress and crazyness of preparation is turning into the tide of excitement and readiness. the time has come. and i couldn't be more excited.
i posted about this before but it merits mentioning again. i have this neat little device called SPOT that i will be activating a couple times a day so that you can follow my position on google maps. once i get out of the harbor here it should go live, i should be a tiny dot on a great big ocean. and that's the way it will be for sometime to come.
thanks again to all of you for your support. the love and assistantce that those close to me have offered this week has been pretty remarkable....lots of good vibes as i head on out.
here are an assortment of photos from the last couple weeks. i know it's what you want. so go on, enjoy!
your friend,
emily

EE Richmond The Impossible Project to sponsor BRTW!
I'm very excited to announce that THE IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT has signed on as an official sponsor of BOBBIE ROUNDS THE WORLD. For those of you not familiar with the project, IMPOSSIBLE is the new team that is single-handedly saving Polaroid film from extinction. They're supplying me with deadstock film to begin my trip with and then I'll be "world-premiering" the new films in February and March when the official re-launch happens. To say that I'm thrilled about this partnership would be an understatement - I simply can't wait to take heaps and heaps of polaroids in some really wacky and off-beat locales.

EE Richmond autopilot!
Man, such a great discovery today - my autopilot works! I thought the ol' thing was a goner but i was feeling curious so i cut open some wires and ran some tests and sure enough there's some life left in her still! I just ordered a copy of the manual so i can sort out some remaining questions but so far so good.
Now, fingers still crossed I'll be able to get the pieces manufactured to adapt the wind vane steering device as well and I'll really be good to go - no more hand steering to the point of exhaustion/delusion this time!

EE Richmond come on old girl
waist deep in a rebuild of an old SAILOMAT 536 windvane. i bought the rig a couple years ago down in el salvador in foresight of this round the world voyage. i paid 400 bucks for it at the time, a new one would go for thousands now...obvsly completely out of my price range. fingers crossed i can get the parts i need to adapt it to my boat machined fairly quickly and inexpensively...
and here's a look at some photos from the manual im using to try to piece this thing together....ha!

EE Richmond in between actual projects...
just got a temp subsciption to netlfix, busily filling my library with good titles to take with me (suggestions welcome!). the entire collection of THE JACQUES COUSTEAU ODYSSEY came today...very hard to resist the temptation to watch em straight away. must be disciplined, back to line drawings and installation calculations...
here, you watch.

EE Richmond sleepy sunday night
full-day spent painting the topsides of the cabin and im pooped. now for a lazy evening ordering some last minute parts and gear before i pass out to familiar sounds of AROUND THE WORLD WITH JEAN DE SUD, one of the greatest sailing films ever made:
